Since 1948, New Hampshire's forests have been inventoried and analyzed five times. The most recent work was completed in 1997 under the guidance of the state forest advisory board and in conjunction with the USDA Forest Service.
Based on this inventory work a statewide forest resources plan is prepared about every 10 years and submitted to the Governor and Legislature. The most recent plan completed in 1996, was two years in the making with the assistance of a 28-member steering committee, USDA Forest Service, technical assessment groups, and the public. An interim status report of the current plan was completed in April of 2002.
Under RSA 227-I:9, the Division registers wood processing mills, or sawmills in New Hampshire. The information collected as part of this process is important to proper forest planning. Mill locations, owners, types of mills, operating capacities, and species and volume of wood and timber processed factor into the statewide forest inventory and forest resources plan. In partnership with the Division, the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension publishes a New Hampshire Directory of Sawmills and Lumber Wholesalers.
