MITIGATION TOOLS TO PREPARE HOMES FOR WILDFIRE

The Fire Adapted Communitites initiative is designed to reduce risk to civilian and firefighter lives, reduce damage to homes, businesses, infrastructure and resources and reduce large fire suppression costs by encouraging people to take individual responsibility to mitigate risk, especially in the wildland urban interface (WUI), before fires start.

This Initiative combines proven pre-fire mitigation tools under one umbrella:

FIREWISE
Defensible space, preparing for wildfire
READY, SET, GO!
Situational Awareness during a fire and safe evacuation preparation
COMMUNITY WILDFIRE PROTECTION PLANS (CWPPs)
Collaborative community effort identifies and mitigates wildfire risk
FUELS BUFFERS
INTERNAL SAFETY ZONES
FUELS MANAGEMENT REDUCTION AROUND THE WUI

Firewise is a program designed for communities to take an active role in protecting themselves from wildfires.

In 2007 NH had its first Community recognized as a Firewise Community.

Located in Tamworth, New Hampshire, Chocorua Ski & Beach Association is a small community set among pine barrens whose 50-year natural burn is a decade overdue.
