Exploring Our Forests
The division is responsible for stewarding and managing over 200 department properties, from Portsmouth to Pittsburg, encompassing over 169,000 acres. In addition to fee ownership, the division administers over 40 conservation easements on an additional 245,000 acres. We also manage the natural resources on over 13,000 acres of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Flood Control properties through an agreement with the Department of Defense, and over 53,000 acres of Wildlife Management Areas through a cooperative agreement with the Department of Fish and Game.
With this abundance of lands open to the public, there are opportunities within an easy drive for every resident of the state to enjoy the beautiful nature New Hampshire has to offer. We encourage everyone to get out and visit these special places, whether it’s a hike to a fire tower that offers spectacular views, or visiting our state’s wonderful biodiversity and rare native plants, there is something of interest to everyone.
